Ariella G.'s Daddy Visits!

Ariella G's Daddy came to visit and read, The Sandwich Swap. The book is about two best friends that each bring a sandwich to school for lunch. One has a hummus sandwich and the other has a peanut butter sandwich. Each girl thinks the others sandwich is unappealing and unappetizing. One day, they come out and say exactly that to each other. This causes a big argument amongst them. However, one day they each decide to taste the others sandwich and realize it is actually quite tasty. The lesson brought down in this book is to always try something before deciding whether you like it or not. Mr. Goloborodsky had the children make a hummus sandwich as well as a jelly sandwich (being we have peanut allergies in the class) to see which they liked better. What a treat!

THE MITZVA AND GOOD MIDDA OF AHAVAS YISROEL!

There many different aspects and ideas to the Mitzvah of Ahavas Yisroel. The Mitzva that commands us to Love Your Fellow Jew. One of the main ideas we focused on in Kindergarten is to work on treating others like we would like to be treated. We read books, made some skits, drew up some projects and had many discussions on this very important topic. In Kindergarten, everyone is great friends and we really care about each others feelings!

Alef-Beis/Hebrew reading update!

We have been working very hard on strengthening our Hebrew reading skills. We try to use new and creative ways to perfect our reading. For example, using Alef-Beis blocks to create our own words or getting into pairs and testing our friends. See pictures below :)

An Author Visits Our School!

Author and Illustrator, Ann D. Koffsky came to visit our school! She read from one of her books and discussed how an author and illustrator create a book. Ann explained that in order to draw a picture for each page in a book, one needs to read all the words on the page and then draw a picture that illustrates them. She explained that an author and illustrator go through many draft before the final product is complete. Ann showed us many of her drafts and the final products, which were the pictures in her book.
After Ann's presentation, she took the time to answer and of the children's question. It was a wonderful experience!
If you are interested in more information about Ann D. Koffsky, please visit her website.

Historic Richmond Town!

Kindergarten went on a trip to visit The Historic Richmond Town located in Staten Island. We were greeted by our tour guide who showed us through the town and read the book, Charlie Needs a Cloak by Tomie dePaola. After she was done reading the book, the students all had the opportunity to try on a cloak! Don't we all look great?
The guide then showed us how to spin wool and sew. We also had the opportunity to get to see a loom. A loom was a device they used to weave clothing. Kindergarten spoke about how living today is very different then living many years ago. We had such an educational and fun time!

Literacy Month

As you know, February is Literacy Month at Mazel Day School! We are inviting all parents to come and read to our class. In the past two weeks, Mirelle and Daniel O.'s mommies came to read to us! Daniel's mommy read some of Daniel's favorite books, The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo Child. After she read the books to the class, she gave the children a picture to color that went along with the books.
Mirelle's mommy read, Lady and the Tramp, also one of Mirelle's favorite books. After the book was read, Mirelle's mommy brought the class some peaches to snack on. What a tasty treat! The children enjoyed having the mommies come and read to them! It was a wonderful experience!
Thank you!
